POLAR BEAR CO2 EARTH DAY RIDE - EARTH DAY NEW YORK 2016

The United Nations Climate Summit COP21, that took place in Paris in the end of 2015, was a historically positive conference, where our world leaders promised to reduce CO2 and other greenhouse gasses.
To put focus on what the goals now are, and what they will do for the future of our world, the message of urgency will brought to New York during Earth Day on Union Square.

This is done with the revealing of the Sculpture “Unbearable” by the Danish artist Jens Galshiøt with his iconic speared Polar Bear. The peak of the spear represents the 2015 global CO2 levels. It is Intentional Art, with a clear and sharp message about the world we are living in.

The New York version will be the one currently on display in the offices of  Mogens Lykketoft, who is the President of the General Assembly at the United Nations in New York.

The large scale version that was also in Paris, will be installed in front of the Danish Parliament.

The above video with Uffe Elbæk from The Alternative about the plans for the installation in Copenhagen.

There will also be a Bike Parade on the Copenhagen Bike Lanes, lead on by the former Cultural Minister of Denmark, now leader of the new Green Danish party “The Alternative” Uffe Elbæk. He is also in town to Feel the Bern!

Other than driving on the Danish Biomega Bike on the Copenhagen Lanes, he will hold a speech on Union Square at 4pm, where Earth Day New York takes place annually. Here he will address our global climate challenges, and how we in a very concrete way can reduce our own carbon footprint, with inspiration from some of the conclusions made at COP21.

The Polar Bear CO2 Earth Day Ride is open for all and the participants are encouraged to wear clothes that in some ways can be seen as Polar Bearish. It is an initiative and Intentional Art Project in collaboration between CO2 Green Drive, Times-Up, The Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space, The Treehouse Factory and Earth Day New York and is part of New York City’s “Car Free Earth Day” campaign.

The route in Downtown Manhattan will be in the Shape of CO2, and will be virtually “painted” with the help of a GPS APP from the Intentional Art Project CO2 Green Drive. The above image is from the Web Interface created by legendary APP programmer GILVADER

The idea behind POLAR BEAR EARTH DAY CO2 RIDE, is to create a intentional public interactive climate awareness performance in a public space, joining creative forces between various New York and Danish activists groups. The first version of the CO2 Green Drive took place in Copenhagen in 2009 with Electric Cars, in connection to the UN Climate Summit COP15. Since then, it has been performed globally over 30 times with Electric Cars, Bikes and Runners. (above drawing by Jesper Hyuk Larsen)

Earth Day New York takes place annually on Union Square. There are numerous environmental organizations present, with booths and green exhibitions, musical performances and various activities for spring longing New Yorkers. All participants in the RIDE, will when they arrive back from the route, be served organic food by Turkish celebrity chef Dilara Erbay from The Triangle Project.

EARTH DAY NEW YORK 2014 - THE "E" TAG WITH BIKES & MR GREEN

Plans are taking shape for the first version of the "e" tag with bikes in connection to Earth Day New York 2014. The previous 3 years, the tag has been done with Electric Cars but this time around it is time for a new TAG and another vehicle. It should also be said that the artist behind CO2 Green Drive (Jacob Fuglsang Mikkelsen) have done the "E" tag on a bike twice in the past.

In 2013, it was done on the above handmade stainless steel Bike from AOI Bicycles.

The 2014 "e" Tag will be done on the bike lanes (AKA Copenhagen Lanes)  around Union Square.

The Mr Green Crew will as always be involved, both for the bike activities and as part of the "Green Car Catwalk Performance" on Union Square. In above image from Times Square in 2011, they are holding the Danish "eco2bike" that on Earth Day New York 2015 will particpate with a large scale installation of bikes.

Plans are also taking shape to collaborate with New York's Bike Activist Group TIME'S UP.
The above flyer is from one of their "Love Your Lane" Valentins events.

They were also part of the Occupy Wall Street activities where they installed Bikes that could charge electronics for the people in Zuccotti Park. More about it HERE

Time's Up & Visual Resistance have been installing "Ghost Bikes" around the New York area for many years. They are bicycles painted white with plaques placed above them to recognize deceased cyclists.

The
NYC Street Memorial Project installs ghost bikes in NYC and maintains the website

www.ghostbikes.org. which includes ghost bike projects throughout the world.  The memorials are intended to honor cyclists killed on New York's streets and to remind drivers to use caution and be aware of bicycles.

EARTH DAY NEW YORK - CO2 E DRIVE: PART 2 - TIMES SQUARE CATWALK 2012

Bob Lutz (the man behind the VOLT) giving a speech on Times Square about his perspective on why he think it is important to drive electric cars and pushing for his new project the VIA Plug in Hybrid Pick-up truck. (If you have not read part one about the story of  Earth Day New York - CO2 E Drive 2012, then go HERE to do so)

See above video from CNN and hear more from Bob Lutz, saying that "essentially car companies are completely neutral to Oil and if cars could, he would be happy to run them on toothpaste"

The "E" tag Performance that was done in the streets of New York City, screened on the Toshiba jumbo screen on Times Square (above photo from 2011 version). Once the route was completed, the cars ended up on Times Square for a "Green Car Fashion Show" in collaboration with Mr. Green

First to enter the Blue Catwalk was the Nissan LEAF, tightly escorted by Mr. Green

The whole performance was also screened on the huge NASDAQ screen. The screen measures 12,000 square feet and uses more than 18 million LEDs on a display with a top resolution of 1280x1824. Read more about the screen in this WIRED article.

Earth Day New York's CO2 E Drive 2012 was yet another wonderful event. CO2 Green Drive thanks Pamela Lippe and her Earth Day New York Team for once again making it all happen!

Later in the evening after the long day of Earth, Yrs Truly took a walk in the city, where I found Empire State Building lit up in Green. What else can One ask for?
